PENN SERVES THE LANGE FOUNDATION
On September 27, 2014, Penn Serves volunteers joined the Lange Foundation’s St. Bonnie’s, a 4.5 acre animal rescue, in Canyon Country to help socialize its rescued animals. We enjoyed a day of petting, combing, playing, throwing and loving! The enthusiastic team greeted 55 cats, 29 dogs, and more than half-dozen ponies, horses. Each volunteer sat in the cat room surrounded by dozens of friendly felines. The cat room was like a spa – providing a serene place to kick back! Many of us walked the dogs or played in their dog runs. Our goal was to work with the animals and help them socialize so that they have a higher likelihood of success in being accepted by a new family!
All of us left wishing we adopt one or more of the furry friendly creatures. Note, one our alumna is considering fostering an adorable Pomeranian. For anyone interesting in visiting and offering a day of service (AKA fun with the animals) please visit http://www.langefoundation.com/st-bonnies-sanctuary.
PENN SERVES ONE-TO-ONE OUTREACH
Eighteen Penn Serves volunteers recently packed boxes for delivery to food insecure, low-income neighbors in South Central - a repeat performance for our group! Because of One-to-One Outreach, many low income families can count on receiving approximately $60 worth of groceries (containing everything from lunchmeat to eggs to bleach) delivered straight to their door the last Sunday of every month. This well-packed, well-timed box helps these needy individuals sustain themselves until the beginning of the next month (when food stamps are delivered). This essential program is run entirely by volunteers, led by founder Ashley Plourde and board member Dr. Michael Schwartz. Ashly even uses his very own driveway for the assembly of the boxes in the first hour; the second hour is delivering them to apartments a short walk away. Making an impact -- one box at a time!
